Trouble in Loomie Land - Diary

A developer diary of game project tree at Playgroundsquad

This page contains brief weekly summaries, and links to the diary written daily
during the production of my third game project at Playgroundsquad.

Overview

Trouble in Loomie Land is a 3D platformer with a cutesy aesthetic and relaxing gameplay that can be player single player or co-op with a friend!

During this project my responsibilities were primarily focused on gameplay documentation, prototyping and implementation. I've also taken some generalist responsibilities, helping out wherever it's needed most.

Week 1

The first week of the first game project was allocated to pre-production. The team assigned roles to our members and we started establishing a universal vision for the art and gameplay design. Artists got busy making concept art and moodboards, programmers started setting up our Unreal Engine project and we designers started work on gameplay design and the GDD.

Week 2

During the second week of development we focused on getting the basics set up fully and started creating some whitebox levels, preparing to make a proof of concept to start testing.

Week 3

For our third week, the team put our focus on creating a playable build of concept of the game. Our goal was to have a functional game by Monday. We prioritized finishing up the most vital aspects that the game needs to run.

Week 4

The fourth week was all about following our Trello cards (our schedule, kind of) and making as much progress as possible on the game.

Week 5

The fourth week was all about following our Trello cards (our schedule, kind of) and making as much progress as possible on the game.

Week 6

We experienced some heavy performance issues, and so began the arduous task of optimizing the game to make it actually run on a mortal PC.

Week 7

Work went on as per usual at Smultronbarna. Following the Trello board, fixing bugs, playing sniper chess. The regular stuff.

Week 8

The penultimate week of the game project, and bugfixing + polishing is the name of the game!

Week 9

The final countdown. Try to make the game work using gaffer tape and prayers! (And lots of hard work)
